WRITING CLUB

Making writing fun!

Improving Literacy and English Skills!

Open to students in Years 3 to 11

Literacy, English, Written Expression

At the Writing Club, we work to help children enjoy writing and to develop their writing skills.

Hand-writing, spelling, sentences punctuated correctly, ideas formed into paragraphs, etc, etc – so many areas to consider!

For many parents, helping a struggling child through the shifting sands of the writing process seems fraught with difficulty.  Now you can turn to Excelr8 Learning.  Our Chesterton Community College learning centre, offers help for children aged 7-16 to develop skills in writing that will equip them to become independent and resourceful writers.

We aim to help children become better writers and, importantly, to enjoy their writing.

More About the Writing Club

‘But I don’t know what to write!’

How many times have you heard your child say that as they tell you about their homework.  And then, unsure of how to help them, you come up with something – anything – just to get them started. At the Writing Club we teach children how to overcome these mental blocks.

‘What’s the best way to start it?’

It can start anywhere you like ….
But of course a child may not understand that initially.  A piece of writing should be planned, organised, drafted, crafted – and all of that takes time. At the Writing Club we use Mind Mapping techniques to help children to structure their writing properly.

‘I think I might have missed out the bit about …’

That’s because we need a plan to guide us, a plan that can change and grow as our ideas take shape. Self-editting is a crucial part of the writing process. At the Writing Club we teach children how to evaluate their own writing, fix mistakes and organise their writing properly.

‘Do you think I should stop there?’

When it seems to come to a natural conclusion, that’s probably a good place to finish it.

And in the process, you may find that your child has written a book!

Some of the steps involved in this complex process will include:
• how to generate ideas and then how to organise them
• discussing ideas with an experienced and interested teacher
• trying out ideas on other children
• instruction about how to form letters accurately and develop a clear, legible cursive style of hand-writing
• assessing spelling and tackling the difficulties
• how to bring variety into sentences
• creating an appropriate structure for any type of written work
• experience of using a wide variety of tools to help in the creative process.
